It’s been a month since Canada Post workers went on strike, and things are still a bit of a mess. The Canadian Union of Postal Workers have reached a settlement regarding layoffs that took place during the strike. They’re calling it a small victory, but the fight still isn’t over yet.
Hundreds of workers received temporary layoff notices while they were striking, which feels unfair. The union argued that Canada Post was trying to scare them into surrender. Now, the settlement means those workers are not officially laid off anymore, but Canada Post can still change staff in the future, which is a concern.
Canada Post said the layoffs were necessary to fix their operations during the strike. About 328 workers were affected, some getting the notices on the very first day. That’s just terrible timing.
Over 55,000 workers are still on the outside, and there’s lots of pressure on the government to step in. Labour Minister Steven MacKinnon stated, “I’m telling these parties to take very seriously the work that they have before them and to get a deal done.” It sounds straightforward, but it’s obviously not that easy.
Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre pressed Justin Trudeau on when the government would step in. Trudeau responded, “The best deals are made at the bargaining table.” While that sounds nice, people just want their holiday mail (and my clothing packages) delivered...
Mediation has been on hold for over two weeks because the two sides can’t agree on important issues like pay and weekend deliveries. They’ve been trading statements back and forth, and it’s getting intense.
With the holidays coming around the corner, many are worried that their gifts won’t arrive on time, or they’ll have to resort to giving out hand-made gifts again. It would be great to see some progress here. I'm hoping both sides can reach an agreement soon, so we can all enjoy the holidays without stressing about our mail and I can stop worrying about what to wear!
