Georgia: Where Cops Make the Protesters Look Good

Georgia is filled with protests right now, and it’s clear that people are really upset. Thousands are crowded in the streets because they’re angry about the government delaying their chance to join the European Union. Many feel like no one is listening to them, and they’re worried about their future, especially since it seems like the country is getting closer to Russia.

These protests show just how much people want change. They’re waving flags and shouting things like “Russian slaves” at the police. It’s heartbreaking to see (mostly) peaceful people treated this way, especially when the police have taken action with tear gas and water cannons. Even the president, Salome Zourabichvili, has called this response “brutal.” It’s hard to watch.

Since becoming independent from the Soviet Union in 1991, Georgia has been trying to find its own identity. With many Russians moving there to avoid military service, locals are scared of losing their culture. One protester said, “We want to build our future, not lose it to outside influences.”

Support from the U.S. and E.U. is super important for the protesters. It shows that the world cares about what happens in Georgia. They’re fighting for democracy and the right to decide their own future. One protester even said, “We will not be silenced. This is our country, and we will decide its fate.”  I truly hope this movement leads to real change, allowing the people of Georgia to take control of their own future.
