Wait come back! Who's going to pay my salary?

British Columbia has really shown their true colours with this new campaign called “Stay with B.C.” Who would've thought we would be gifted with desperation for Christmas? B.C. citizens are finally giving up on their province and moving to Alberta. Almost 70,000 people left B.C. last year! Ouch that's awkward...

Laura Jones, the head of the Business Council, said, “Living in B.C. shouldn’t be so hard.” Really Laura? We’ve known this for ages, time to get in the game. The cost of living is going up faster than we can keep track, and finding jobs feels like searching for coffee under $6. It’s really no surprise people are tempted by Alberta’s promise of a better life.

The “Stay with B.C.” campaign wants to "solve” the ongoing problem of affordability. Jones wants to get people talking about how to make B.C. a place young individuals actually want to stay in. “Leaving isn’t the only choice,” she says. But let’s be honest, if B.C. wants to keep people around, it needs to become a place people actually want to live in.

Then there’s also our new finance minister, Brenda Bailey, who announced that B.C. is facing a huge deficit of $9.4 billion. Don’t worry though, she promises “smart, targeted investments” instead of cutting services. What does that even mean? It sounds like a different way of saying, “We’re doing something, but not much!”

Can B.C. really keep young people from moving to Alberta? Who knows! If they can make life more affordable and of course, worth living, maybe they can! Let’s be real, if I had to choose living between paycheck to paycheck or a cheaper life in Alberta, no thinking would be involved.
